Crepes have become a cuisine worldwide associated with France, whether covered with rich chocolate and powdered sugar for dessert or loaded with fruit for a weekend breakfast. A crepe pan is an excellent instrument for making gorgeous thin crepes, a delicate and popular French treat. This evaluation of the best crepe pan reviews is here to assist you in finding the best crepe pan for you.

So what's a crepe pan? A crepe pan has a flat or round bottom and a diameter of 8 to 10 inches. The right crepe pan allows you to make perfect mini crepes or French omelets since it has a shallow edge and a perfectly smooth cooking surface, just like a French crepe pan. Thanks to its distinctive design with low sides and a non-stick and flat surface, it's a versatile pan for making tortillas, bacon, fish, omelets, and even pancakes or pizza.

Most high-quality crepe makers now have non-stick or well-seasoned surfaces, making flipping and sliding crepes into the plate a breeze. However, before using a crepe pan made of cast iron or carbon steel, it is necessary to season it at home.

What Sort of Crepe Pan Should You Use?

A crepe pan, an electric corded, and a cordless electric crepe maker are the three types of crepe makers used by home cooks. Most home crepe pans and makers range from 7.5 inches to 16 inches. However, a 10 to 12-inch crepe pan is recommended for home cooks and beginning crepe-makers.

1. Crepe Pans

The best crepe pans are thin and short, making them easy to store. Non-electric crepe pans provide you with the precise heat control you need to achieve the perfect golden hue in the least amount of time. Furthermore, it is simple to empty a pan if you pour too much batter into it.

Non-stick, cast-iron, and enameled cast-iron crepe pans are the most common. Cast iron pans can cook to considerably higher temperatures than non-stick and even the electric options. Unfortunately, they're also bulkier, with handles that tend to grow hot, making it difficult to flip crepes.

2. Electric Crepe Makers

Electric crepe makers are ideal for making restaurant-style crepes or cooking crepes for a crowd. The surfaces of the largest profile are composed of non-stick aluminum plates, making them lightweight and inexpensive, but their temperature settings aren't perfect.

Heat indication lights indicated that the crepe pans are ready to use in two to five minutes, but they are usually unreliable predictors of whether the crepe pan is hot enough to use. On the plus side, all non-stick cooking surfaces are simple to clean, which is significant given that none of the electric models can be submerged in water.

3. Cordless Electric

Cordless electric crepe makers are perfect if your batter spreading or flipping technique is rusty or nonexistent. They cook evenly, don't need to be flipped, and make thin crepes every time. In addition, they're the quickest to heat up within 90 seconds, and their peak temperatures are often lower than those of corded electric crepe makers.

Despite the wipe-clean non-stick surfaces, the cordless crepe makers are the most difficult to clean due to gaps between the non-stick surface and the attached base handle. The best crepe pans and crepe makers, whether cast iron or aluminum, are listed below:

Buying Guide for the Best Crepe Pan

1. Material

The material determines the durability and type of cooktop you can use. Aluminum, enamel-coated cast iron, carbon steel, and even ceramic or blue steel are common materials used in crepe pans nowadays. Each material offers benefits and drawbacks that are ideal for certain purchases.

a) Cast Iron

Raw cast iron is used on a variety of cooktops. It's heavy, long-lasting, affordable, and the non-stick quality improves with each usage. But, on the other hand, it requires seasoning and upkeep.

The next best option is enameled cast iron crepe pan. It has the majority of the advantages of raw cast iron crepe pans without the need for maintenance. However, the disadvantage of an enameled cast iron crepe pan is that it is much more expensive and does not develop the same non-stick characteristics as regular cast iron.

b) Carbon Steel

It's an uncoated substance that needs to be seasoned and cared for, yet it's quite long-lasting. The main distinctions between carbon steel and raw cast iron are that it is thinner, smoother, and slightly more expensive.

A carbon steel pan has a flat cooking surface ideal for crepes, and it also develops amazing non-stick properties. The disadvantage is that a carbon steel crepe pan heats up rapidly and does not disperse heat evenly because of its thinner design. As a result, crepes may not cook as evenly as cast iron crepes. It is also vulnerable to acidic food.

c) Non-stick

The easiest to use and clean crepe pans are those with a non-stick coating. Non-stick crepe pans come in other stainless steel or aluminum. Crepe batter should almost never stick, making flipping a breeze. When it comes to non-stick pans, one thing to keep in mind is the cooking surface's durability. Handwashing and using only wood or silicone utensils will help ensure good non-stick performance. Even so, a non-stick crepe pan will not last as long as a cast iron or carbon steel crepe pan.

d) Aluminum

The lightweight, great exterior and core material make the uniform setting possible. However aluminum core is not compatible with induction cooktops.

2. Design

A good crepe pan should have a shallow side with a flat cooking surface, which allows you to keep your crepes thin and flip them easily. Choose a heat-resistant handle with a comfortable grip and easy control. A longer handle will make it easier to slip the crepe from the crepe pan to the plate.

3. Versatility

A multi-functional crepe pan is great if you want to do more than simply make crepes. For example, the entirely flat bottom of a crepe pan is ideal for preparing griddled sandwiches, tortillas, and scrambled eggs. Other foods cooked in crepe pans include fries, pancakes, omelets, pizzas, etc.

As a quick and easy flat-top addition, you will enjoy using a cast iron crepe pan right on your grill. It's a terrific method to keep tortillas warm for an outside taco bar or to cook eggs or bacon to add to burgers.

On the other hand, it's not a terrific pan for anything that involves a lot of liquid or fat. The low sides don't provide much protection from spills and splatters, and using it for liquid-heavy dishes might result in a major mess on your stovetop.

4. Dimensions and Weight

The diameters of most crepe pans range from 8 to 12 inches. For most residential cooktop burners, that's a good size. With a huge size, like 12 inches, you can prepare multiple dishes at once. However, a huge crepe pan will be more difficult to handle. The smaller crepe pan is easier to operate and takes up less space in your kitchen.

The weight of a crepe pan is a more crucial component to consider before making a purchase. You will find that using a lightweight crepe pan is much easier to handle. A heavy crepe pan may take a bit longer to heat up, but it will heat more uniformly and stay hot when you add cold batter. It speeds up the cooking process and guarantees that the crepes are more consistent.

5. Non-toxic

PTFE and PFOA are two hazardous substances to avoid when purchasing crepe pans. Both are dangerous substances contained in Teflon non-stick coatings, and they can seep into your meals and harm your health. Carefully inspect the crepe pan before bringing it home to verify it is free of dangerous chemicals.

Frequently Asked Questions(FAQs)

1. Is a Crepe Pan Required for Making Crepes?

Fortunately, making crepes does not necessitate the use of a crepe pan; any excellent skillet will suffice. To prepare a crepe, you'll need a sturdy skillet with a flat bottom that heats evenly. As long as your pans aren't deformed, in which case you should replace them, you can use them. To ensure that the crepes don't stick to the pan, use a non-stick skillet.

Flipping crepes in the short-sided crepe pan is simple, but it is no more so than in any other skillet. Another advantage of using "regular" skillets for cooking crepes is that you have a wider variety of sizes to select from without needing to acquire any more cookware.

2. How Do I Make the Perfect Crepes?

Crepes are a quick and easy dish to make for breakfast or dessert. They're cousins to the pancake, but they're a thinner, crispier variation ideal for topping with fresh fruit, syrups, chocolate sauce, whipped cream, and ice cream.

  • 310ml milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 150 grams plain flour
  • 1 tablespoon caster sugar

Whisk together the milk and eggs to produce the batter in a container. Sift the flour and sugar together in a mixing bowl, then form a well in the center. Gradually whisk in the milk mixture until it is completely smooth. Set aside for 20 minutes in the refrigerator.

Grease an 8" frying pan and warm it over a low to medium heat. Add 2 tbsp. Batter to the crepe pan. Cook until golden brown. Repeat the process on the other side. Place on a plate and cover it to keep it warm. Continue with the remaining batter.

3. Is it Possible to Make Crepes out of Pancake Batter?

Pancake mix can be used to produce crepe batter as a shortcut. However, because most pancake mixes contain a leavening agent, the resulting crepes may not be as thin and flat as traditional crepes. Instead, they will be thicker and fluffier than crepe batter made without baking soda or baking powder.

The pancake batter will require the addition of milk, egg, and any optional extracts. The cooking procedure is the same as that of a conventional crepe batter.

4. What’s the Best Way to Clean a Crepe Maker?

Handwashing traditional crepe pans is an option. If you're using a raw cast iron crepe pan, make sure it's completely dry and oiled after each use to avoid rust. Most electric crepe makers offer easy-to-clean non-stick cooking surfaces. After you've finished creating your crepes, simply disconnect the machine and let it cool fully. Then, using a damp cloth, wipe the cooking surface clean.
