What Should I Look for When Choosing the Best Blinds for Bedroom

There are numerous factors that you'll need to consider before buying bedroom window covering. So, let's look at how to choose the right blinds for your bedroom windows.

a) Type of Blinds

i) Venetian Blinds

Traditional Venetian blinds have horizontal slats, twistable wands, and draw cords that control the amount of light that gets through them. On the other hand, modern Venetian blinds are made with high-quality materials and have better designs.

Slats can be made of aluminum, wood, or vinyl, which makes them more durable and attractive. In addition, Venetian blinds are cordless, and users change their height by pulling or lifting the bottom.

Most Venetian window treatments lack blackout-level control for light, barely improving window insulation.

ii) Vertical Blinds

Vertical blinds are normally used on sliding doors and they have long slats that swing sideways to open. They are not ideal for people with small children and pets, as they tend to be picky. If you open or twist them incorrectly, the components that make them move may malfunction.

Some varieties of modernized vertical blinds come with broad, sliding fabric panels that may not break easily. One of the major drawbacks of these blinds is that most of them open or close without adjusting for light.

iii) Roller Blinds

Roller blinds are made from cheap plastic sheets. They come in a variety of patterns, colors, and fabrics. Light-blocking capabilities highly depend on the fabric, however, some do so very efficiently.

Roller blinds are not adjustable for light or privacy beyond lowering or raising them. However, they tend to be expensive because they add a decorative touch depending on the different materials used to make them.

iv) Pleated Blinds

Pleated blinds feature accordion-shaped faces that fold on top of each other when lifted. They are available in two main categories;

  • Standard pleated blinds

Standard pleated blinds tend to let in more light and this makes them less expensive. In addition to that, they come in a variety of patterns and colors.

  • Honeycomb blinds

Honeycomb blinds normally trap air between the fabric layers which adds a barrier between the window and temperature-controlled spaces. This, in turn, helps to increase energy efficiency. Honeycomb blinds are also better at light filtering than the standard option. These blinds also have cords but are routed between the layers of fabric to keep them away from kids and pets.

v) Roman Blinds

Roman blinds are stylish and add elegance to a room. They are made of fabric and fold onto themselves while opening. Roman blinds are ideal for blocking out sunlight and have insulation benefits. They can lower a room's temperature variance if they are tight-fitting in the window frame. This feature is suitable for areas with hot summers and cold winters.

Roman blinds are fabric in nature, so manufacturers normally add lining to them. Roman shades vary and can be expensive, depending on the material and lining. You can also find them in various patterns and colors.

Roman blinds can add a lot of style to a room. They are typically made of fabric, and they fold onto themselves as they open. They come in a variety of colors and patterns.

vi) Smart Blinds

With tech-savvy smart homes, one can have and control smart blinds that work with their digital voice assistant. It is connected through Bluetooth or wifi, through which you can adjust the height and slat angles. This enables you to get enough amount of light in that room, and you can control them even when you're away from home.

The majority of smart blinds are roller style, but you can also find them in hybrid or Venetian styles. You don't need anything special to install smart blinds as they have a wifi controlled motor in the top bar.

Once you install them, set up the motor to work with a smart device. You can then program them to open and close on schedule as desired.

vii) Automatic Blinds

Automatic blinds are the same as smart blinds, except they do not tie into smart home devices. They are roller shades that use the remote control to move the height and slat angle.

b) Size and Fit

Getting the right size and fit is the first step to giving your window that stylish and elegant look. To get the right size of window coverings, you also need to get the right size of your window.

If you prefer to have your blinds sit inside the window frame, you can start by measuring the side jamp to get the width and the top jamb to the sill to get the height. In general, you should ensure the blind width is as close to the actual width as possible. For the length, get a size that is slightly longer than your window frame.

On the other hand, if you prefer to have your window blinds in front of the frame, you should consider picking a size 2-3 inches wider than the window. This allows for an overhang on both sides. Add a few inches to the height to account for mounting the blinds higher.

c) Material

You can find blinds in different materials. Plastic versions are more common as they tend to be cheaper, easy to maintain, and lightweight. Metal blinds are also quite popular as they are easy to maintain and affordable.

Higher-end blinds are made of real wood slats and are relatively more expensive than those made of plastic or metal. Also, you can get meet-in-the-middle options made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). These types are more commonly known and cost considerably less.

Maintaining PVC blinds is also less troublesome. Despite their inexpensive nature, PVC blinds offer the look and texture of wood, making them look expensive, yet they are not.

There are also textile options that are more expensive than plastic and metal but are competitive with wood. Fabric window blinds are better at preventing light transmission.

d) Installation Requirements

Installation is among the many things you should consider when buying the best blinds for your bedroom. Most blinds have brackets you should drill and screw into the wall or window sill to hold them.

If you plan to DIY and do not call an expert for professional installation, you should know how to install blinds and get a few tools for the work. These include a screwdriver, a step stool, a drill, a steel measuring tape, and a level. Ensure it has all the necessary hardware, like screws, blind materials, and mounts.

Window measurements allow for an inside mount or an outside one, so you should know which one your blinds are before you start drilling. Ensure you read the instructions carefully to get the expected results.

e) Features

Current window coverings are better and more advanced than the simple and plastic window blinds of the past. They come with extra features, which may include;

i) Soundproofing

Soundproofing is a great way to block out noise from the outside world. This may be from the road or neighbors. Blinds with soundproofing features reduce sound transfer, hence making them a great choice for bedrooms.

ii) Blackout

Blackout blinds that fit well can block light effectively from entering the room. This is especially suitable for those working nightshift and sleeping during the day or people who like to sleep in.

iii) Room Darkening

Room-darkening window coverings regulate the amount of light penetrating through the window. However, unlike blackout shades, room-darkening ones do not block out all the light.

iv) Thermal Insulation

Conditioned air manages to escape through the windows. Some blinds offer thermal insulation and they manage to keep the cold or warm air within the house and maintain the desired results in the room.
