The placement of toilet paper holders in bathrooms usually seems like an afterthought. However, depending on the setup of your bathroom, a free-standing toilet paper holder could be ideal.

Growing up with wall-mounted holders was the norm. Then, of course, time brought about more modern bathrooms with lots of space to accommodate free-standing holders. The best free-standing toilet paper holder we reviewed is the MDesign Steel Toilet Paper Stand Organizer. It was a portable toilet paper holder which fitted even in small spaces. Our second-best choice is KES Bathroom Toilet Paper Holder Stand which only came second because it had a minimalistic design; it was open on both sides, thus making switching toilet paper easier. The third free-standing toilet paper we selected is the Amazon Basics Free-Standing Bath Toilet Paper Holder, which was very strong and sturdy.

Free-Standing Toilet Paper Holders Buying Guide

After using these toilet paper holders, a few things stood out to me. For starters, what should I have considered before adding my items to my cart and checking them out?

Here is a list of some things I have learned along the way:

A) The Storage Capacity Matters

Most free-standing toilet paper holders can hold at least 2 rolls. However, I liked the holders that could hold more than 3 rolls at a time. Stacking 3 or more rolls of tissue paper ensures no one gets stuck in the bathroom in an emergency.

Additional rolls of tissue ensure guests are comfortable. They don’t have to ask for tissue when they visit. Apart from that, I also liked other storage features. For example, a small storage shelf on the holder can hold another roll of tissue paper or even wet wipes.

Some holders have features such as a magazine rack to store magazines. You can also store other personal belongings in the extra space.

B) Having A Functional Design

I like to ensure that all the free-standing toilet paper holders I purchase are functional. Unfortunately, while beautifully crafted toilet holders are on the market, functionality is a deal breaker. If you have an old toilet paper holder which is not functional, it might add a decorative touch to a shelf somewhere.

However, it has no point if a free-standing toilet paper holder can’t be beautiful and practical. You have to consider the holder’s height to ensure it’s accessible to people of all ages. Also, look out for a weighted base to prevent the holder from toppling over.

C) Material, The Holder, Is Made Of

Most companies that sell any free-standing toilet paper holders use various materials. However, the most common and best metal is stainless steel. Ceramic, wood, plastic, and chrome finish metals are also used. Stainless steel works well because it is heavy.

Other materials may need to be weighed down at the base to give them sturdiness and support. Your choice of holder should depend on your needs, bathroom design, and household requirements.

D) Decorative Add-Ons

Most free-standing toilet paper holders I have used have a minimalist design. However, there are free-standing holders with decorative details.

You can also have holders with catchy slogans and puns to brighten your space. Additionally, there are different colors of chrome finishes and paint to customize your holder. Furthermore, you can always personally customize your free-standing holders with any design you want.

E) Budget For The Minor Splurge

You need to budget for the right toilet paper holder that will suit your needs. I purchased all the free-standing toilet paper holders for between $17 and $50. However, there are cheaper options that come without storage space. You can also purchase high-end models for more than $100. High-end models come with all the features you want on a free-standing toilet paper holder.

Additionally, expensive free-standing toilet paper holders have quality metallic finishes. They might also have artistic details.

F) Holder Size And Capacity

A large-sized free-standing toilet paper holder might be bothersome for small bathroom owners, especially if it has to share space with a plunger or bathroom caddy. There are free-standing toilet paper holders best suited for small bathrooms. However, any holder will be suitable if you have a spacious bathroom and it will carry extra toilet paper rolls.

Larger holders have larger storage space and can accommodate larger toilet paper rolls, store extra rolls and other toiletries.

Placing Your Freestanding Toilet Paper Holder

Most people will place their free-standing toilet paper holders where there is space. However, the standard placement of a toilet paper roll is next to the toilet. There is nothing wrong with this. However, here are some spots you might have never thought of.

I) Back Of The Toilet

If you are confident of the stability of your free-standing toilet paper holder, then you can place it at the back of the toilet. You can also place it on top of the flushing tank. However, if you plan to place it on top of the flushing tank, ensure it isn’t tall.

Ii) Between The Bathtub And Toilet

Most small bathrooms have a space between the bathtub and the toilet. You should try if the space fits your free-standing toilet paper holder. The space might be enough for a smaller-sized toilet paper holder; however, if the space can fit a larger one, then all the better. In addition, your tissue holder will be protected from water by the shower curtain.

Iii) Corner Of The Wall

If your toilet is built between 2 corners, your free-standing toilet paper holder can be placed on either side. This position will keep your toilet paper storage dry and avoid any splashes of water going on the rolls.

Iv) Between The Sink And Toilet

If your toilet is next to a sink, not the bathtub, you can place your free-standing toilet paper holder. However, placing your toilet paper holder there has its downsides. First, there is a good chance that water will splash onto your tissue paper every time you use your sink.

Other Free-Standing Options

Apart from free-standing toilet paper holders, other options exist besides wall-mounted holders.

Not everyone has the bathroom floor space for a free-standing toilet paper holder. This is the reason there are other space-saving alternatives. Luckily, you can complete some simple DIY installations in less than an hour. Here are some that I have attempted:

1) Decorative Baskets

You can either make or buy decorative baskets. Firstly, they are very cheap. Secondly, they are very useful. A single decorative basket with compartments is spacious enough to hold at least 4 spare rolls of tissue paper.

You would place the basket on the back of the toilet flush tank. This way, your tissue paper will have somewhere to stay without getting in the way. Additionally, if you have the time, you can research how to make your decorative baskets. They will come in handy and make the best toilet paper holders.

2) Over-The-Toilet Racks

I like how much storage space an over-the-toilet rack comes with. The shelves on such a rack can be used for towels, bath robes, candles, and anything else. Using the bottom shelf for storing tissue paper is recommended. This prevents you from straining when you need to reach for the toilet paper.

The rack doesn’t take up much space since it goes over your toilet with a wall-mounted holder. So instead, it occupies space that’s already occupied. The rack is also very strong and reinforced. As a result, it can hold a lot of weight so that you can load it with many toiletries.

3) Floating Shelves

There are ready-made floating shelves with suction pads that will easily go on your wall.

If you want a solution that will last longer, you can get floating shelves that need permanent fixation.

Floating shelves don’t take up any floor space. They also look stylish and can be set at any height you prefer.

4) Storage Bag Hanger

There are hangers or hooks with compartments. Placing rolls of tissue in the compartments or material toilet paper holders behind your bathroom door or the toilet is convenient.

Hanging the hanger behind the bathroom door makes sense if you can easily reach the tissue rolls.

However, you can always place one roll on the toilet tank. In addition, the hanger and its compartments can house other rolls of tissue paper.

5) Cabinet Under The Sink

You can have a cabinet built under the sink if you have a sink. This will give you more storage, and you can also store extra rolls of tissue paper.

It can also be made with many compartments to ensure enough storage. For example, you can use the extra storage for towels, soap, and bath bombs. Furthermore, you can use cabinet storage to store other necessary toiletries.

Frequently Asked Questions On The Best Standing Toilet Paper Holder

I) Are All Toilet Paper Holders Standard Size?

No, they aren’t. However, most toilet paper holders fit standard rolls. Other toilet paper holders are equipped to hold jumbo rolls. Large free-standing toilet paper holders are perfect for a large bathroom and vice versa.

Ii) How Do I Choose A Free-Standing Toilet Paper Holder?

I find that the height and where you position your holder are the most important things to factor in. If the holder is too high, a child might not reach it. Additionally, if it’s too low, you might strain to get toilet paper. The holder should be placed at a seating height on either side of the toilet.

Iii) Is A Toilet Paper Holder Necessary?

If you want an orderly bathroom, you might find a free-standing toilet paper holder necessary. Therefore, it is highly recommended to own a free-standing toilet paper holder. Holders create a tidy appearance and provide toilet paper when needed.

Iv) How Can I Store My Tissue Paper?

Toilet paper is one of those things I buy in bulk. With the right care and storage, tissue paper can last for years. I store toilet paper rolls in a dry and clean area. I don’t take the rolls out of the packaging unless I need to refill the free-standing holder.

vi) What is the most effective way to hang toilet paper?

The most effective way to hang toilet paper may depend on personal preference and individual circumstances. However, the most common and recommended way is to hang the toilet paper over the top of the roll rather than under the roll. This makes it easier to find the end of the toilet paper and tear off the amount needed without it getting stuck or unraveling.

Additionally, having the toilet paper hanging over the top of the roll reduces the risk of the roll falling off the holder. Ultimately, the best way to hang toilet paper is the way that works best for you and your household.

vii) What can I use instead of a toilet paper holder?

Suppose you don’t have a toilet paper holder or would like an alternative option. In that case, you could consider a few options: Remember, the most important thing is that your toilet paper is easily accessible and within reach when you need it.

  1. Use a shelf: You could install a small shelf above your toilet or next to it to hold your paper rolls.

  2. Use a basket: Place a basket on the floor next to your toilet and store your toilet paper rolls in it.

  3. Use a wall-mounted magazine rack: You could install a magazine rack near your toilet to hold your toilet paper rolls.

  4. Use a freestanding holder: You could purchase a freestanding toilet paper holder that doesn’t require any installation and can be easily moved.

  5. Use a repurposed item: You could get creative and use a repurposed item, such as a vintage crate or a metal bucket, to hold your toilet paper rolls.

viii) Where do you put the toilet paper holder in a small bathroom?

When installing a toilet paper holder in a small bathroom, it’s important to consider both functionality and space-saving solutions. Here are a few options for where to put the toilet paper holder in a small bathroom:

  1. Next to the toilet: The most common location for a toilet paper holder is on the wall next to the toilet. This is a convenient location that allows for easy access.

  2. Behind the toilet: If space is limited, consider installing the toilet paper holder behind the toilet. This will keep it out of the way while still being easily accessible.

  3. Inside a cabinet: If you have a vanity or cabinet in your small bathroom, consider installing a toilet paper holder inside the cabinet. This will keep the toilet paper out of sight and free up space on your walls.

  4. Under a shelf: If you have a shelf above your toilet, consider installing the toilet paper holder underneath it. This will keep the toilet paper within easy reach without taking up any additional wall space.

The Bottom Line

With free-standing toilet paper holders, it is all about placement. Besides being very stylish, free-standing holders are portable and don’t need to be mounted to a wall.

This list consists of great holders that are worth it. However, they aren’t a major splurge. Therefore, you should consider getting a few pieces for your bathrooms.

Most toilet paper holders look good with all bathroom decorations. Therefore you needn’t worry about having a piece of décor that looks out of place.
